Our letter of the week was Ee and our sight words were "do" and "this".
Our focus book was The Rainy Day. We worked on expository text (nonfiction) and made predictions about what the book was about. We learned that expository texts teach us something. We looked at features in this book and learned about the rain.
Then we read the book Beware which was a nonfiction book purely for entertaining. We read this several times as it was a fun rhyming book. The children liked to predict what was going to be on the next page that rhymed.
We worked on digraphs this week and learned about the H family. Ask your child to tell you about them.
In math, we are beginning our addition unit. We read this book as an introduction to addition.
We learned about tools that can help us add. The first is the tens frame. We practiced creating addition problems with our partners.
We learned how to use a number line and practiced representing addition sentences with "hops on the line". We will delve into this further next week.
We also used a number strip to represent addition. We know that we can use our fingers and manipulatives to also help us add.
In science, we started talking about weather and the four seasons. Here are some of the books we read.
We made a season bracelet to represent the cyclical pattern of the seasons.
We recorded the weather in our science journals after observation for the week and graphed the different kinds of weather we observed. We made weather window books to show what each season looks like.
In social studies, we continued talking about American symbols. We learned about the Statue of Liberty and had lots of fun making one.
Our class won a play date after school on Tuesday, March 4th with Coach Schafer for their healthy resolutions. If you would like for your child to stay, please send me a note, otherwise, I will send them home their normal way. Students are to be picked up at 3:50 in the front of the school.
