Week 24

Let's take a look at what we have been learning this week in Mrs. Langham's class.

Our letter of the week was Ee and our sight words were "do" and "this".

Our focus book was The Rainy Day. We worked on expository text (nonfiction) and made predictions about what the book was about. We learned that expository texts teach us something. We looked at features in this book and learned about the rain.

Then we read the book Beware which was a nonfiction book purely for entertaining. We read this several times as it was a fun rhyming book. The children liked to predict what was going to be on the next page that rhymed.

We worked on digraphs this week and learned about the H family. Ask your child to tell you about them.

In math, we are beginning our addition unit. We read this book as an introduction to addition.

We learned about tools that can help us add. The first is the tens frame. We practiced creating addition problems with our partners.

We learned how to use a number line and practiced representing addition sentences with "hops on the line".  We will delve into this further next week.

We also used a number strip to represent addition. We know that we can use our fingers and manipulatives to also help us add.

In science, we started talking about weather and the four seasons. Here are some of the books we read.

We made a season bracelet to represent the cyclical pattern of the seasons.

We recorded the weather in our science journals after observation for the week and graphed the different kinds of weather we observed. We made weather window books to show what each season looks like.

In social studies, we continued talking about American symbols. We learned about the Statue of Liberty and had lots of fun making one.

Our class won a play date after school on Tuesday, March 4th with Coach Schafer for their healthy resolutions. If you would like for your child to stay, please send me a note, otherwise, I will send them home their normal way. Students are to be picked up at 3:50 in the front of the school.

Week 23

Hurray for nice weather! I think we had our first full week of school since winter break. I wanted to thank everyone for making my birthday so special. It was one of the best days ever and I appreciate all of your kindness and generosity.

This week we have been reviewing our letters. Our sight words are "did" and "if". This was our book of the week.

We had fun painting our sight words and painting during some free choice time.

In social studies, we have been learning about our presidents.

In math, we began a unit about coins. Students should be able to identify each coin and tell the value of each coin. We read about the penny. Please review these skills with your child.

We also learned about presidents and the first one we learned about was Abraham Lincoln.

We had fun making our Abraham Lincoln craft.

We even played with Lincoln logs.

Next, we learned about the quarter.

We read books about George Washington and made a craft.

We learned that the bald eagle is a symbol of our country and is on the back of some quarters.

We also learned and read about the nickel and the dime.

Another fun activity that we started this week is Tile Time. We are solving puzzles and games with tiles and tangrams. We are already looking forward to doing this next week too. Thanks to my parent volunteers for making this possible.

We spent 2 afternoons practicing for the Fine Arts Festival that will be on the evening of March 6th. Please don't forget to put that date on your calendars. Have a great weekend!!!

Weeks 21 and 22

What  a whirlwind of weeks that have gone by. I got the wonderful opportunity to attend a kindergarten conference in San Marcos for 2 days last week. Unfortunately, my sub forgot to take pictures during those days. We also had a snow day and a couple of late starts that really compromised my picture taking too. Here are the highlights of the last two weeks.

Our focus books are below. We have been learning to find patterns in books and make predictions on what the text will be on the following pages once we have learned the pattern. These books also are about community helpers that we have been studying. We also have learned the difference between wants and needs.

Here are the letters we learned. Our sight words have been "are", "for", "you" and "love".

We celebrated our 100th day of school. Here are some of the activities that we did. We wrote our numbers to 100.

We drew pictures of what we would like like when we are 100 years old. Then we wadded the paper up to add wrinkles.

We made 100 fingerprints.

We made 100 dots with Bingo dabbers.

We made 100 day crowns and Fruit Loop necklaces using 100 Fruit Loops.

We had a special snack.

And we made a special snack out of 100 items.

But the celebrating did not stop on that day. We had a late start the next day and still managed to celebrate our 101st day by making dalmatian headbands and painting our faces.

We made our own dalmatian and put 101 spots on him. We grouped the spots by tens and his eyeball was the 101st dot. We enjoyed watching the movie in the afternoon.

Our buddies came and helped us make our Valentine's holders. We had fun with them this week. They even made us a card to celebrate the 100th day of school.

Here are just a few of the Valentine books we read this week.

And we saved the best for last. Our Valentine's party was so awesome. Thanks to all of our parents that helped put this together and bring in supplies, not only for the Valentine party, but our 100 day celebration too. You guys are the best and I couldn't do it without your support.
