We enjoyed reading The Paper Bag Princess and retelling it on the story board. We identified the problem and the solution in the story and wrote about it in our reading journals.
We learned 3 more reading strategies. Skippy the frog teaches us to skip the word and read to the end of the sentence. Then hop back to the beginning and see if you can figure out what the word is from the context of the sentence.
Caring Kangaroo is the last strategy we should use. When we've tried everything else, then we ask for help.
Tryin' Lion teaches us to try a word that makes sense.
We learned about carnivores and herbivores and made a Venn diagram to compare the two different types of dinosaurs.
We measured dinosaur bones using unifix cubes.
We pretended to be paleontologist and we dug for dinosaur bones (chocolate chips) out of the soil (cookie).
In science, we began talking about dirt. We went on a nature walk to our garden area to look at the different types of soil around our school. We had so much fun exploring soil with our magnifying glasses.
After exploring dirt, we read about it and learned about the different layers of dirt and what you can find in dirt. For some reason, the kids are fascinated that soil has animal droppings in it. We wrote about our observations in our science journals.
We collected a small sample of sand and glued it into our science journals. We learned that rocks break down into pebbles and pebbles break down into sand. When we hold a handful of sand, we are really holding a million tiny rocks in our hand.
Then we made our own fossils with modeling clay.
And some of us had fun at centers making Olaf too ;)
