We came back to school on St. Patrick's Day. In all of my years teaching, this is the first time that the children have had school on this day. Normally, it falls during spring break. We read some books to learn about this holiday.
We had a review week in language arts. We did not have any new sight words, but we did work on "with" by using a St. Patrick's Day book. Here is our focus book this week.
You have probably heard, but we changed up our math rotations. The students now will daily work with the teacher. Here are some students working on rainbow factors of 10 with me.
Another day, we worked on filling out a +1 and +2 chart. Some students were eager to fill out the entire chart. Way to challenge yourself!
While the students are working with me, the rest of the class is doing other rotations. Here is a group working in their math journals.
Others are doing math work stations.
And the other group is working on the computer playing math games. We have been using Johnnie's Math Page. You are welcome to go to this free program at home Johnnie's Math Page
We began learning about Texas this week by singing a Texas Bingo song. We also watched a Powerpoint of the Texas ABCs.
We learned about the six flags that have flown over Texas and we made the current Texas flag. We recited the Texas pledge.
The pecan tree is the state tree of Texas. We had fun making these pecan trees using Sugar Smacks as pecans.
We read some fun books about the armadillo and we learned that the armadillo is the small mammal of Texas.
Then we used macaroni to make bands with our armadillo craft.
We learned that the bluebonnet is the state flower of Texas. We are starting to see some of these pop up here in Central Texas. We read this folk tale about the bluebonnet.
Then we painted some bluebonnets.
We had so much fun reading some Texas fairy tales. Some were very familiar stories with a Texas twist. We enjoyed comparing the Texas stories with the familiar ones. Here are some that we read.
Pajama day was so much fun! We are ready for bed after a fun day of playing hard!
